Kerning attempt on fixed width font on a sign at the exhibit I recently saw at Site Santa Fe. Just wrong. Below is the entire label.
Site Santa Fe (a local gallery) has an exhibit called “Unsettled Landscapes,” where I saw this work entitled “The Great Tree” by Miler Lagos. The sign accompanying the piece says “Lagos pays homage to the majestic Ceiba tree… standing over 14 feet high, this massive paper sculpture is carved from over three tons of recycled newsprint. To create it, Lagos unfolded, stacked, bound and carved thousands of pages from Santa Fe’s local newspaper, The New Mexican.” Below the picture is a very short video I took of the gallery attendant ruffling the pages of the tree.
If you’re in the area, the exhibit is well worth seeing. It’s in the gallery until Jan 11, 2015.

This week I’m making a set of Cat’s Cradle matchbox books. On the left are the pieces, cut out and folded and ready to assemble. I do some of the cutting on my Robocraft cutter, and some with the xacto knife. The long metal thing in the lower part of the picture is a clay needle tool. I use it to help me pick up little pieces of paper on my workbench, compensating for my lack of long fingernails.
Cam Wild’s Periodic Table of Typefaces. He arranged them by a ranking he made up from statistically sorting and combining lists and opinions from various sources (100 best typefaces of all time, typefaces no one gets fired for using… but he doesn’t mention this one: a plea from the 16 most overused fonts). Check out Wild’s page for his methodology.
Stumbled across this art dispensing machine here in Santa Fe over the weekend. The sign says “Put in $5, pull the knob, and ker-plunk you’re an art collector” My friend Tracey & I are now proud owners of 2 little pieces of art.
This is Tracey’s art-o-mat purchase. It’s an original watercolor (lower left) by Trish Randall, packaged in a little teeny shopping bag and came with some seed paper (lower right) that is meant to be planted
