Paper Passion

Karl LagerfeldWant to smell like paper? I know I certainly don’t want to smell like an old book. But Karl Lagerfeld, the Chanel designer, does. And according to this article in the Independent

Lagerfeld — who is known for his love of books and says he stocks more than 300,000 of them in his famous personal library — is already working on the fragrance… (The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)) reports that Paper Passion, which will be sold inside a hardcover book with the pages hollowed out to hold the flacon, will be developed with Berlin perfumer Geza Schön, who told the paper that “the fragrance will have a fatty note,” probably along the lines of linoleum, and that he was taking his inspiration from the smell of printed and unprinted paper.

Okay, since when did linoleum smell like paper?? But the article also mentions several other fragrances that are “inspired” by paper (who knew?) including Paperback with this description

A dusty old copy of a Barbara Pym novel did it for us. This Demeter scent is sweet and just a touch musty, a lot like Pym’s world come to think of it. Read her if you haven’t. Her writing is wonderful, if slightly musty, English satire from the 60s and 70s.

Hand Dyed Linen Thread

Heidi Ferguson’s Hand Dyed Linen ThreadLast fall I went looking for my stash of colored linen thread. I never found it (if I had any left, which of course I couldn’t remember!). I only needed a small amount so I ended up coloring white linen thread with acrylic paint and a brush. Then the other day I saw a reference to Heidi Ferguson’s Hand Dyed Linen Thread. Seems much more economical than dying batches of thread myself (however, to do it yourself, here are directions).

Pi Pie Contest Results

Last month I posted about a Pi Day Pie Contest. Well the results are in, you can see the finalists here. I made an unadorned (although yummy) apple pie in my Pi pie plate. See the winners here and all the entries here. Below are some of my favorite entries:

: I asked my nerd friend what pi-related thing I should make into a pie form. The answer I got: “You should use the Riemann zeta function with power 2. i.e. 1/1 + 1/4 + 1/9 + 1/16 + … + 1/n^2 + … = (pi^2)/6.” I was totally lost at this, but made a polar plot of the function for him.

Pi Leaf

My Pi Day post was a bust — the youtube video was taken down because of copyright issues. Pi Day fell on a Monday this year. Tuesday morning I found the leaf pictured below on the front stairs of my house. Looks like several Russian Olive tree leaves got stuck to an old Aspen leaf — we have many of these trees on our property, several of them right next to each other. I thought it was a lucky coincidence, don’t you?

March Mathness

Etsy has a feature where visitors can curate lists of things they find on the site. Usually these lists have a theme, and my stuff gets selected for groups that have to do with reading or libraries or Jane Austen or Sherlock Holmes. But the ones I like best are all number images. Recently I was selected for one called Math Madness, compiled by Elaina Louise Studios. Here are the ones I especially liked. You can see them all here.
