Chili: A Pictorial Recipe

After winning a chili cook-off at his home in northeast Iowa, David Esslemont illustrated his recipe in thirty-nine woodcuts and bound them into this book. He toasts chiles, makes stock, grinds beef, adds garlic & tomato paste… The result is shown on the cover (first picture, below). See all the woodcuts here and Esslemont’s other books (many of them about food, with names like “Taxi Driver Curry” and “Pizza”) here.

As part of the Sketchbook Project, Lisa Kirkpatrick did this cut out book from an 5 x 8.5″ moleskine cahier notebook. The Sketchbook Project organizes global, collaborative art projects, with their biggest on-going project a crowd-sourced library that features 33,800 artists’ books contributed by people from over 135 countries. They have a challenge page with other short term projects. Here’s a few pictures of Kirkpatrick’s notebook. See more here.

Chomp: A Puzzle Book

Puzzle book by Mirim Seo & Kelly Holohan (2012). They say: “Chomp puzzle books are designed to teach kids about basic food chains. Each puzzle introduces a different level of a food chain in its environment; Forest, Ocean, Arctic, Jungle, and Desert. All food chains include, producers, consumers, and decomposers and each plays a role in the chain. When completed, the puzzle shows the eating process.” Many more photos here
